Joy Oxbow was the observant inquisitive type. She was quiet long enough to compose the perfect observation, one-liner, or whimsical insight. She was Clara's best friend in part because Joy knew how to listen.
Clara by contrast enjoyed to talk yet she wasn't narcissistic in tone. Clara grew up with low self-esteem issues which affected her decision making. Clara was a bit dependent on Joy for her advice. For Clara, Joy was like her personal Dear Abby.
The two college friends had an appointment for coffee at the corner cafe. This weekly meeting was different. Over the phone that morning Joy noticed a real urgency in Clara's voice, like she was in trouble. For the first time in the 25 year friendship Clara didn't have to say anything. Joy new there was something amiss. She sensed an urgency in Clara's voice but was forced to read behind the lines...
Joy made it to the Attic Cafe her breathe trailing behind her. She didnt have to open the door the wind did that for her. She planted herself at the friends' usual table and took to replaying her conversation with Clara. With her headphones tucked into her ears Joy listened intently for clues.
Tim the cafe barista approached her with concern.I assume you'd like the usual? Joy removed an ear bud and said of course in a trembling voice. Joy figured she'd need her white Chocolate mocha with a doulbe doze of expresso to crack this capper. Missing links!
Joy sat there coddling her mocha and scribbling notes on her legal pad.
She was stuck as she attempted to put a couple clues together.
Then suddenly a sound of shattered glass rang in Joy's ears. She looked up and saw the Attic's picture window completely shattered. The glass was strewn across the floor.
Customers and Employees worked hastily to clean the debris while Anne the owner called her insurance agent.
As Joy and Tim were picking up the pieces they noticed something peculiar under Joy's table....
