The Murders in the Rue Morgue is one of Edgar Allan Poe's most famous stories, which was published on April 20, 1841 in Graham 's Lady's and Gentleman's Magazine , giving rise to the detective story. With this story Poe introduces the character of Charles Auguste Dupin, inspired by Eugene Francois Vidocq (1775-1857), a criminal turned policeman. Dupin inspired the character of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. The story is about a strange Special Data case of murder, and Poe wrote two more stories based on Dupin. Doctor Miracle , this is the Italian title of the film Murders in the Rue Morgue , is a 1932 horror film, directed by Robert Florey, with Bela Lugosi among the protagonists, playing Doctor Miracle, and Sidney Fox as the main actress. The Murders in the Rue Morgue from story to film is only a film loosely inspired by the story, which appropriates some of Poe's most obvious elements to create a story in its own right. It's called a horror film, but there's definitely nothing horror about it. There is no supernatural element and the emphatic acting of the actors, many of whom are real caricatures, make the atmosphere anything but scary. However, it must be said that I am judging a film from 1932 with the eyes of a man from 2012, so it is very likely that it aroused very different emotions at the time. Some violent scenes were even cut. Doctor Miracle , or rather The Murders in the Rue Morgue , is however an interesting film, which does not fail to offer a tribute to Poe's work. One of the scenes is identical to the story and I'll let you discover which one. Have you read Poe's famous story? In your opinion, can it be transported to the cinema without problems?
